Wear flowers with pride

Here in the UK it seems that Summer has been kidnapped and we’ve been given lots of rain in it’s place.

Even so, nature has still carried on regardless and I’ve been struck by how many beautiful flowers have continued to blossom despite being pelted by almost incessant rain.

Inspired by many of these flowers, I created this hat.

Look how pretty this looks on!

I’ve rather fallen in love with this crocheted hat. I may just keep it.

I don’t usually wear feminine hats to be honest. I’ve been known to wear a fedora or two though… strange woman that I am. Maybe this time I shall make an exception and wear flowers on my head with pride.

Or maybe I will sell it .

Hmmm…….

Newborn Matinee Jacket and Hat sets

I’ve been hooked back into crochet. I’ve tried distracting myself with a bit of bead work but the good old hook has got me again.

I’ve branched out a little and started making my first garment. Here is my first little matinee jacket and matching hat set for newborn baby girls.

This little jacket and hat set would fit newborn babies and features crocheted flowers with pink pearl detailing ( crocheted in beads for extra security) and a pretty butterfly wooden button fastening. It is made in really soft raspberry ripple double knit yarn . Both hat and jacket have a frilly picot edging. The set costs just £20 plus p+p .

I’ve also made little boots that would match (£12 a pair)

Cute little boots for tiny little feet. ( Fit up to 3 months)

or for larger feet I’ve made these very popular t bar shoes that would fit up to 6months of age. (£8 a pair)Both boots and shoes come packaged in their own very cute dinky white box.

These and more are available to purchase on my facebook page , if you aren’t a fan of my page yet, please click the like button!

If you’re not a Facebook person, I do have a shop on Folksy:

Crochet Bright and Beautiful on Folksy

so do pop over and have a browse.

Right, I’m off. The hook is calling me again…

I know. I’ve got it bad.

Hats Off To My New Shop!

Well I’ve spent all day taking photos and uploading and writing descriptions and finally, FINALLY I’m just about done . I’ve got a new shop at Folksy. It’s called

Crochet Bright and Beautiful

and it’s looking rather lovely, if I do say so myself.

Here are some of the things on offer.

There are earflap hats for babies:

Hats with rainbows

Rainbow daisy baby hat

Hats that are toadstools

Toadstool daisy baby hat

Hats with dots and a Swedish flavour:

Swedish bobble earflap hat

Kids hats with a twinkle

Star hat

and beanies galore:

Cute and bright beanies, who needs pink?

Well, sometimes you gotta have a pink hat.

Granny made me wear this. Am I cute or what?

Everyone loves ladybirds, don't they?

Hats for bigger kids too, or even for grown up’s…

pink and orange hatsblue and purple hats

and even baby fascinator hats …well,  alright, headbands. But they are gorgeous.

Who can resist one of these ?

A flower for a fairy

and for the tiniest of babies, there are single dainty cotton daisies.

When you're really small, you need something delicate.

So is it just hats?

Hats just the beginning. ( Groan).

There are shoes. And dolls and crocheted rubber ducks.

That’s for another time.

Hats the way to do it!

Okay, I’ll stop now.

Funky and fun fairy toddler hats

Here are more pictures of the hats and accessories that I have been busy making.

I don’t know about you, but I’m rather bored with the run of the mill baby and toddler stuff available out there. Childhood is meant to be fun and let’s face it, they’ll only let you dress them up when they’re little, so why not have fun with it?

Here are some hats that are inspired by my love of fairyland and all things bright and beautiful, plus a few newborn size cotton flower crochet headbands if you are thinking of gilding the lily that is your newborn daughter. I’m happy to take orders for other sizes, just register your interest. Turn around is two weeks for each item. Cotton beanies are £15 , yarn beanies are £10. ( p+p inclusive for UK)

Earflap hats are the same price. Practical as well as cute, they sit firmly on a toddlers head resisting that wonderful urge they have to pull off a hat.

Making our own family traditions

I love traditions. I love the repetitive sense of looping time in each event. Unfortunately unless you count my long deceased Nan’s ( RIP Nanny Kath) recipe for cheesy potato bake that has been handed down in the family, I can’t really think of any traditions in our family. So I decided to create one of my own.

When my eldest daughter was born, ( she is now 23, where did the time go? ) I had a bit of time on my hands so my fiddly fingers turned to embroidery (when I wasn’t drawing her ( here is a very indistinct drawing of my daughter drawn while she was breastfeeding)

Somehow the flash adds to the picture?

I’m really not joking when I say I have fiddly fingers and need to be doing something with them all of the time! While baby was sleeping, I embroidered her name on a piece of calico and surrounded it with flowers. I had memories of my beloved Nan embroidering flowers for table runners. Somehow it made me feel connected to her. Once the embroidery was complete, I turned it into a simple dress which baby wore quite a few times. Now I have it hanging on my living room wall, since  her 5 foot 10 frame wouldn’t fit it anymore!

My baby grew up so beautifully

Second baby arrived and I had no time at all! I had a three year old and a new born, my fiddly fingers were very much being used to full capacity. So I never had the chance to make one for my lovely Allegra Jane.

Me and Leggy-Loo

Fast forward 18 years and Allegra Jane had a baby of her own. Erykah-Rose made me into the world’s proudest grandma and I knew what I had to do. The tradition needed to extend down the generations, here was my perfect opportunity. I embroidered her name and flowers representing her name ( Erica/a form of heather and Rose) and then crocheted long lengths of white cotton lace to decorate her completely hand sewn garment; a garment made with dollops of love from her doting grandma.

Here it is.

Made with love

So, I hereby claim to have started a family tradition of the name dress. ( We only seem to make girls on this side of the family, so if a boy came along I’m sure we could adapt to suit).
