Extra special Baby Headbands for Extra Special Baby Girls

I like to make individual pieces, I’ve realised. I’m not good at replicating. Some people enjoy the repetition thing but I find that the joy for me is in the creative process. The moment when something comes together that has never existed before is  a truly special moment and that is where my satisfaction lies.
So… that means that everything that I make will be unique.
Here are the latest bunch of little bits of uniqueness.

I’ve been making baby headbands since I came across some really special velvet trimmed soft elastic , it just had to be adorned with something pretty and made into headbands. So I did.

Here’s what I’ve made thus far:

pretty baby girl headbands

Here is the full collection of baby headbands. All different and all special. Just like baby girls.

Performance Art inspires Crochet

I’m a granny.

I crochet.

I’m also an artist and performer.

You can’t put this granny in a box when it comes to crochet. I make granny squares but I also make art.

An unfinished baby, sewn in velveteen

I’ve always loved performance art and have long been a fan of the late, great Leigh Bowery.

Pushing boundaries of body image and beauty.

His life celebrated in the West End musical Taboo, he in turn inspired another one of my heroes , painter Lucien Freud, who used Leigh as one of his biggest models.

Lucien Freuds masterful work.

I’ve recently discovered performance artist Marnie Scarlet through  a mutual friend, the wonderful painter John Lee Bird who had recently painted Marnie’s portrait as part of his Before Encore exhibition series. Please drop by this wonderful man’s site and support his art. If you have a few spare pennies, maybe you could help him reach his sponsor target. It’s tough for artists right now, all Arts Council funding has been scrapped this year because of the Olympics, so if you care about art, show  your love. Here’s a link to his blog for more information and examples of his fantastic art work.

Marnie is an extraordinary creative soul and I feel she has taken Leigh Bowery’s legacy of playing with taboos and body image and expressed it as a strong woman. Be warned though, most of Marnie’s work is not suitable for those under 18 or who are easily offended.

After totally falling in love with one of Marnie’s incarnations: A Mexican Day of the Dead character, I was inspired to make a crochet version of her.

So here she is, I’m rather stuck on her.

Isn’t she lovely?

Every detail faithfully reproduced, right down to the high heels!

Look at her posing

Such a sassy lass

But wait, that hair style looks familiar…

Where have I seen that look before?

Oh yes, that’d be my work ribbons . I’ll avoid the matching skull face for work I think…

I think she ties in rather nicely with my sugar skull brooches

Available for sale in my Folksy shop.

Marnie the dolly is not for sale right now. I think I may make a range of ‘Scaries’ to go with my fairies, so until I do that you can’t have her.

She’s MINE!!! Nyeh, nyeh , nyeh, nyeh! ( Sorry came over all silly there)

But the brooches are  for sale, only £6.50 each for handmade , every one unique .

Head on over to my Folksy shop

CROCHET BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL

if you’d like to order one.

Ms Jo Bangles ( with apologies to Mr Bob Dylan)

Along with the necklaces I’ve been making , I’ve been making elasticated bangles as well ( mainly for girls ) Well, you can’t have naked wrists now can you?

So here they are :

Pure pretty pinkness with pink glass heart charms

The ‘Barbie’ one.

Word bracelets.

Butterfly pearl

Pink floral

Rainbow cubes

You’re a star

Doll

Dancing Dolls

All bangles are a bargain £3.50 each (plus p+p) but if you want to avoid the p+p and fancy a trip to lovely Brixton , come and see me at my stall Crochet Bright and Beautiful tomorrow ( Saturday 30th June ) in Station Road.

I’m not there very often, ( probably 4 times a year) so this is your chance to come and grab yourself something unique and locally made.

Come and see me !

I’ll be there from 9.30- 5pm and if you don’t know what to look for, this is a hint:

A Beady Eye for Necklaces

Not content with just crochet, I’ve taken up jewelry making as well. As if my fingers weren’t occupied enough!

( Well I am a bit of a magpie, anything that sparkles and all that…)

Here are the latest additions to my stock.

Forget 5 a day, why not have 9 portions of fruit instead with this delicious fruit necklace and matching bracelet.

This pretty necklace was made for a very special lady. I’m happy to make any design to order.

I call this one the ‘Fairy Special’ as it is very special. ( See what I did there? ) Three strands of sparkles and flowers, all held together with sparkly links and pink flowers pointing towards a fairy pendant and a pink miracle bead. ( The miracle beads need to be seen in real light to really appreciate their magic. They glow like they’re alive!)

Detail of the fairy pendant . The necklace is made from three strands of strong elasticated transparent nylon making it perfectly safe for young necks.

I believe these necklaces would make perfect gifts for young girls. They’re all unique. So if you are looking for a gift for a girl who has everything , here it is!

Beautiful Bird of Paradise

I’ve been neglecting my blog recently and I apologise. I’ve been so busy in my incarnation as Diane’s Puppets that I’ve hardly had time to breathe.

When I’ve managed to get a bit of time to sit down , I’ve been working on a very special piece. It is a coat I’ve called the Bird of Paradise. I think the name is self-explanatory.

Beautiful hand made coat for infants

She’s a beauty!

I’ve made her as a  present for my lovely granddaughter who turns two next week.

It’s made on a small crochet hook ( 2.5mm) so has taken quite some time to complete.

Detail of the fastening

Here is the back view:Based on a circle yoke

I could remake on commission if anyone is interested but due to the week’s labour that is involved, it would cost £80, but for that you would be getting a unique, one of a kind piece designed especially for your child.

If interested please email me at thebabyfairyfifi@hotmail.com

or pop over to my facebook page

and leave a message.

I’m hoping my little tiger is going to love her magical coat.

Naughty Fire Fairy!

The naughty ones are the cutest …

Here’s my latest creation, inspired by the flowers that I picked up from the £1 shop. They were bright yellow and orange roses. They immediately shouted FLAMES to me.

She’s adorable don’t you think?

Crochet fairy

Introducing my brand new teacup Fire Fairy

She’s really dainty and dinky, measuring a mere 8 inches /20cm in length. She fits into a teacup, but she’d rather climb out and go and cause trouble…

Cute crochet fairy

Climbing out the teacup , off to find some naughtiness.

Although she has safety eyes and there is nothing sharp about her, she is a collectible rather than a toy due to her handmade nature. She’d make a very lovely friend for an older child .

Peepbo!

She has a sparkly crystal effect necklace in fiery colours and a little silver love heart that says Made With Love. Because she was.

Crochet fairy in teacup

Chilling in her cup.

She has glittery pink and black wings, her legs and arms are pose-able and she has a crocheted flame skirt. Her hair is wild, like flames made of a deep red shimmering yarn and a bright orange flecked yarn.

Flying off for new adventures

She comes packed in her very own white box and can even be purchased with the teacup should you wish.

Cute fairy in box

Ready to leave home.

She costs just £25 plus p+p and is available either via my crochet Facebook page

or in my Folksy shop:

Crochet Bright and “Snood-iful”

Jewel bright Snoods now in stock

If you fancy a little bit of high fashion granny square crochet style but don’t want to commit to a full size behemoth of a scarf

Granny Square scarf

So many beautiful colours

I’ve made this:

Granny square snood

Bright and Beautiful and ever so cosy.

Snoods are so handy aren’t they? They provide a splash of colour in an instant, and keep your neck and head warm as well. Unlike a scarf , you won’t have to keep adjusting it, it won’t fall off or drag on the floor/dip in your soup but stays nicely wrapped around you.

If your ears get cold then you can always do this:

Ooh nice and cosy!

Made of 8 large granny squares in jewel-bright colours edged in black , bang on trend as witnessed on the Dolce and Gabanna Catwalks this season, this  handmade snood can be yours for just £20.

You could always design your own colour ways , just let me know.

Pop over to my Facebook page and send me a message. ( Everyone’s on Facebook these days surely?)

If not, I’ll soon be listing the snood in my Folksy shop.
